Art for your bathroom: Etsy

One dilemma in bathrooms is mold, mildew and umm, art. What do you hang in your bathroom that will not be affected by condensation due to showering? In Colorado, we don’t have as much to worry about as say people living on Nantucket, or even the East Coast for that matter but moisture exists no matter where you live especially if your bathroom is not well ventilated.

My wife and I go round and round about what art to put in our bathroom. I have always had some form or art in the “lew” but since we have moved into our new house, the walls remain bare, except for towel racks, and of course, the toilet paper holder. I am lobbying for some art and here we have found a few reasonable pieces. Etsy. Have you heard of Esty? Neither had I until a few months ago. You can find just about anything you need here. AND you can find art FOR bathrooms. Art OF bathrooms. Take a gander and see if anything catches your eye.

Again, if you find something appropriate for this site, please share. I will post it here.

Thanks

Grand Salon, Denver

Rating: A-

I recently needed a haircut so I called my favorite salon, Grand, and made an appointment.

Every time I visit Grand, I use their bathroom. Sometimes I don’t even need to use it, it’s just that I love the simple, clean, modern design. AND it always smells good in there.

One of the questions I ask, which I have not had answered yet, is what type of cleaning products do you use? This is very important when giving a rating because the greener the products, the higher the rating.

I rate bathrooms on a number of qualities and this one ranks at least a 9 on every one, including:

  • Cleanliness
  • Design
  • Color
  • Fixtures
  • Usability

Grand Salon in Denver has one of the funkiest simple, modern-designed bathrooms I have seen yet.
Here are some stats:
  • Salon designed by Ivins Design Group, Denver, CO
  • Toilet and sink from Hughes Supply - Crane Brand
  • Kohler, Triton faucet
  • Lighting by Cashway Electric Supply, Fusion Complete Lighting Systems ( extremely hard to reorder - seem to be a bit unique and obscure - LOVE them!)
  • Cleaned daily.
  • Serves as changing room for clientele.

Water Conservation in the Bathroom

Hello readers.
We are coming up on Spring, actually, it IS Spring….the first day of, today!
With Spring here, we need to think about watering. Actually we should also be thinking about water conservation IN the house, not just outside in/on the lawn.

Here are some reminders and usage tips about how much water we use and how you can save water in the bathroom

Bathroom Water Efficiency

Toilets made before 1993 use 3.5 to 8 gallons per flush (gpf). High efficiency
toilets manufactured after 1993 use 1.6 gpf or less. The date of manufacture
of most toilets is on the underside of the tank lid. A family of four
can save 14,000 to 25,000 gal/yr by switching from conventional toilets
to the newer, more efficient ones. Your water utility may even offer rebates
for replacing convential toilets. Additional water savings can occur by
making sure your toilet is not leaking and that the flapper is working
properly. Here are other suggestions for increasing your toilet-use efficiency.

  • Install vacuum assisted, low-volume toilets.
  • Consider not flushing the toilet unless absolutely necessary.
  • Regularly check for toilet leaks by placing food coloring in your
toilet tank. Repairing leaking toilets can save more than 600 gallons
    of water per month.
  • Do not use your toilet as a wastebasket.
  • Make sure your toilet flapper does not remain open after flushing.
  • Avoid using toilet bowl cleaners such as toilet tank tablets. These
products affect the pH of water in your toilet tank and can cause leaks
by damaging the rubber and plastic parts of your toilet.

Showering Efficiency

Showerheads currently manufactured in the U.S. have a flow-rate of 2.5
gallons per minute (gpm) or less. Here are some suggestions for increasing
shower-use efficiency.

  • Install a low-flow showerhead if you do not already have one.
  • Keep your showers brief. A shower that lasts for five minutes using
a low-flow showerhead uses 12 gallons of water. If possible, use a watch
to time yourself while you are in the shower.
  • Turn off the water while you lather up with soap and shampoo.
  • Irrigate your indoor plants by placing a bucket in the shower to collect
the water while waiting for it to warm up.
  • Check the flow rate of your showerhead by using a 5-gallon bucket
and a clock. Turn the shower on full and place a 5-gallon bucket under
the shower for two minutes. A 2.5 gpm showerhead will fill the bucket
up in that two-minute time frame.
  • Check the flow rate of your showerhead by using a 5-gallon bucket
and a clock. Turn the shower on full and place a 5-gallon bucket under
the shower for two minutes. A 2.5 gpm showerhead will fill the bucket
up in that two-minute time frame.
  • Check and repair leaks in the tub diverter valve.

Faucet Efficiency

  • Install low-flow faucet aerators on all your household faucets. Some
aerators can restrict flow to less than 1.0 gpm.
  • Do not run the faucet continuously while washing dishes and hands,
    shaving, or brushing your teeth.
  • Checking and repairing faucet leaks can save up to 140 gallons of
    water per week.

.. apparently they also have a guy version (thanks Engadget)

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone.

Hands Free Sink Faucet

In our quest to prevent the spread of germs and make the handwashing experience seamless, here is a great product that enables you to wash your hands without touching the fixture. I love this concept. I give bathrooms a higher efficiency and style rating based upon this type of design and fixture.

Hands-Free Faucet

Homeowners can easily and affordably save water by installing low-flow aerators on new and existing faucets. Kohler’s version features a 1.5 gpm flow rate, a 30 percent reduction over 2.2 gpm models.

The company’s Tripoint Touchless Electronic Faucet utilizes an activation sensor that saves water by keeping false activations to a minimum.

Three Fresh Bath Product Ideas

1. Cool Cabinet

Bath-time can be an experience for the senses with the option of built-in audio systems, chromatherapy (using mood-enhancing colors), or even tub-side refrigeration.

HIGH-TECH TWISTS

Keep cold beverages on-hand with Robern’s latest medicine cabinet. A portion of it includes refrigeration—also perfect for nail polish, or organic skin products (with no preservatives), or medications that need to be kept cold.

2. Tricked-Out Shower

Kohler’s DTV shower was introduced last year, but the latest version is fully loaded. It features a control system for the shower with functions like water pressure and temperature, but also chromatherapy (from above), steam, and a built in stereo system, all controlled from a LCD screen that can be mounted on the wall.

3. WATER-SAVING FIXTURES

With the introduction of the government’s WaterSense label (similar to Energy Star), manufacturers are getting smart about reducing toilet and faucet water use.

Low-Flow Toilet

Caroma, an Australian company, was one of the first to offer dual flush technology, which allows for two different flushing options: .8 and 1.6 gallons per flush. And now almost all of the large toilet manufacturers offer dual-flush toilets. Caroma has 31 different models (shown is the Adelaide Cube).

Cancer In Your Bathroom?

When the alarm rings she slowly gets out of bed, turns on the shower and under the steady stream of warm water, she gently scrubs her body with Ammonia, Formaldehyde and Phenol.

Next, she shampoos her tinted hair with DEA and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

Rinsing out the shampoo, she applies a good amount of mutagenic DEA & Propylene Glycol and lets it penetrate while she pops the top on the shaving cream and shaves her legs with A-Pinene.

The shower finished, she towel dries and spreads on an even coat of Contaminant Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PHAs) and a dusting of an Asbestos Substance over her skin.

She sprays the scented Aluminum under her arms, brushes her teeth with FD&C Blue#1, Resorcinol, Saccharin, and Fluoride; with a trace of TriSodium Phosphate.

Then she rinses and gargles with Ethanol and Phenol Alcohol.

She combs setting gel through her hair then blows it dry and sprays it with polyvinylpyrrolidine(PVP).

Sitting at her vanity, she carefully applies a thin film of Phenol Carbolic Acid, Dioxin and Propylene Glycol, over her face to reduce the fine lines.

Today, she’ll wear foundation and a little FD&C Red #3. And, better add some eye-Iron Oxide, for today she is attending a special meeting.

Oh, and add a little toxic and mutagenic Ascorbyl Palmitate to line her lids, and a stroke of bacteria & Polyvinylpyrrolide (PVP) to her lashes.

A dab of Benzo-A-Pyrene and Benzo-B-Fluroanthene to color her lips. A spritz of her favorite scent, Toluene and Benzaldehyde, and a little carcinogenic nitrosamine, NMPABAO on her face, arms and legs to block the suns rays.

Now, she is set for the day. She looks radiant… “breath-taking” beauty we call it… because her looks are literally KILLING HER!

Do These Ingredients listed above absorb through the skin? Well, if you’re wondering if the chemicals mentioned above can absorb through skin, try this experiment… Get a clove of garlic. Cut it open and rub it on the bottom of your foot. See how long it takes for you to taste it in your mouth…

Take note that the skin is not a barrier that keeps chemicals and ingredients out. The skin absorbs almost everything applied to it. [i.e. That is why nicotine patches and diet patches that are adhered to the skin surface work.]

So What’s The Cause For Alarm? What has the woman in the above scenario exposed herself to, in a matter of just minutes? What is really being put on and in the body by millions of unsuspecting people, every day?

Let’s find out… Let’s start with the innocent bar of soap…

    * Bar Soap has a pH of 9, which removes the protective acid mantle of the skin making it more alkaline and therefore, more vulnerable to penetration.

Bar Soap also contains Ammonia, Formaldehyde and Phenol, known carcinogens [cancer-causing agents], and Triclocarbans.

    * Shampoo contains Cocamide DEA, which is associated with carcinogenic [cancer-causing] Nitrosamines and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, a known mutagen.

    * Hair Tint contains Quaternium-15, which releases carcinogenic Formaldehyde and the carcinogen, Phenylenediamine.

    * Conditioner contains DEA & Propylene Glycol both known mutagenic carcinogens.

    * Shaving Cream contains a-Pinene, a chemical that damages the immune system.

*Body Lotion contains Mineral Oil, which, as a cosmetic grade Petroleum product, includes the contaminant Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PHAs) known as xenoestrogens that can mimic estrogen in the body.

*Dusting Powder contains Talc, a substance like Asbestos. When talc was combined with a common air pollutant, Benzo(a)pyrene, it induced tumors in 80% of the animals tested.

Many scientists believe Talc should be placed on the “known carcinogens” list.

*Deodorant has Aluminum, which is being tested in connection to Alzheimers.

*Toothpaste contains Saccharin and FD&C Blue#1, which are carcinogens.

It also contains Resorcinol, which can cause a blood disorder (methemoglobinemia), convulsions and death.

Fluoride is also a known carcinogen.

*TriSodium Phosphate, also found in some toothpastes, is a chemical primer that strips grease and dirt off walls and surfaces. It is so caustic that it warns the user to wear gloves at all times and to avoid any skin contact.

*Mouthwash contains 27% Ethanol, which is suspected of causing esophageal cancer.

It also contains Phenol, which can cause fatal poisonings through skin absorption.

*Hair Spray contains Polyvinylpyrrolidine (PVP) and reports show that it may cause harm if the particles are inhaled. Modest intravenous doses fed to rats caused tumors.

*Skin Moisturizer contains Phenol Carbolic Acid, which can cause circulatory collapse, paralysis, convulsions, coma and death as a result of respiratory failure.

It also contains PEG-40, which contains dangerous levels of dioxin. And Propylene Glycol, which studies show can negatively alter brain waves and cause liver and kidney disorders.

*Blush contains FD&C Red #3, which caused human breast cells to grow, mimics the effect of natural estrogen at the molecular level and damages the genetic material of human breast cells.

*Eye shadow contains Iron Oxide, which is a suspected carcinogen, teratogen or toxin.

*Eyeliner, contains Ascorbyl Palmitate, and studies suggest that the Palmitates are to be considered carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic.

*Mascara may be contaminated with bacteria. It also contains Polyvinylpyrrolide (PVP), a carcinogen.

*Lipstick contains Paraffin, which is a mixture of Hydrocarbons and is derived from Petroleum. It is known to be contaminated with the carcinogens, Benzo-a-pyrene and Benzo-b-fluroanthene.

*Perfume contains Toluene, a suspected potent carcinogen that has been found in almost every fragrance tested, and Benzaldehyde, which is a central nervous system depressant that may cause kidney damage.

*Sunscreen contains Padimate O and the preservative, BNPD, which together create the carcinogenic nitrosamine, NMPABAO.

Did You Know…

According to recent DAILY USE estimates, 3 personal care products are used on infants and children daily.

Men use 10 personal care products daily.

Women use 6 cosmetics and 13 personal care products daily. Some products are used several times daily.

Assuming mainstream industry products each contain only 2 carcinogens, [cancer-causing agents], this results in daily exposures to 6 different AVOIDABLE
carcinogens for infants and children, 20 for men, and 38 for women DAILY.

And while ingredients are listed on product labels, there are NO warnings as to the CANCER risks from any of these ingredients.

It is UNTHINKABLE that women would knowingly continue to inflict such exposures on their infants, children; let alone on themselves, if products routinely used, were visibly labeled with explicit warnings of cancer risks.

So are you asking yourself… “why this has not yet been enforced by laws, that should be protecting bodycare product purchasing consumers?
