How to clean granite countertops

With the proliferation of granite in both kitchens and bathrooms, we get questions on how to clean your granite countertops.
Based upon research from cabinet installers, kitchen designers and This Old House, here is the latest news on how to keep your bathroom countertops clean.
First off, if you have installed new bathroom granite countertops you might want to wipe on a solvent-based sealer called an “impregnator†with a soft cloth. Start with one coat, then wait a day before applying a second coat. This can last around two years before you need to apply a new protective coat.
The sealer won’t make the stone stainproof but it gives you extra time to clean up whatever you do spill on the countertop.
- Do not use an abrasive cleaner or anything acidic such as lemon or lime, or vinegar-based window cleaner.
- Wipe up any spills and messes right away
- Use a wet sponge with warm water and some standard dish soap
- Someone suggested using isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and a mixture of water and liquid dish soap - i have tried it and it works wonderfully.
- Purchase a granite bathroom countertop cleaner from Target or Kmart
They say that as long as you keep from using a strong abrasive scratchpad/sponge, and do not use anything acidic like a liquid lemon mixture or spray and you will be fine, keeping your bathroom counters shiny and clean.
Happy cleaning.
